Why Local Will Dominate Mobile Ad Spend

The biggest question I’ve received in the wake of a recent mobile advertising forecast, is why locally targeted ads will be so dominant. Specifically, BIA/Kelsey’s U.S. Mobile Local Ad Revenue Forecast projects overall mobile ad spending to grow from $690 million last year to $4.86 billion in 2015 — steep but not surprising.

OZ Mobile Phone Market Set To Grow 127%

The Australian mobile services market will grow from around 29 million subscriptions this year to more than 35 million by June 2015, according to new research from Telsyte. A rise in bring-your-own-devices (BYOD) plans, along with SIMs covering multiple consumer devices and some 3 million machine-to-machine (M2M) mobile subscriptions will take Australia’s mobile services skyward, the market research firm forecasts. Indonesia’s Mobile Phone Shipments Jump 68 Percent in Q3

Mobile phone shipments in Indonesia experienced significant growth in the third quarter of 2011 according to a report released by International Data Corporation on Wednesday. IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile report showed that Indonesian phone shipments surpassed 12 million units in the third quarter, greater than the 10 million shipments made in second quarter. Third quarter growth represented a year-over-year growth of 68 percent.

Dubai company banking on profitable boom in mobile ads

A Dubai company has launched a mobile advertising network in response to what it claims is “huge demand” for marketing via smartphones. Plus7, which has been launched by the digital company Clique Media, hopes to cash in on a global mobile advertising industry worth an estimated US$2 billion (Dh7.34bn). Ashwin Salian, a co-founder of Clique, said the platform would “connect advertisers and publishers”. He added that he envisaged “huge demand” for mobile advertising in the region.

Indonesia: Mobile phone market at tremendous growth

The mobile phone market in Indonesia has accounted an unprecedented growth as number of mobile shipment in the third quarter takes a dramatic increase, having surpassed 12 million units from second quarter’s 10 million units set on record.

In an IDC report, said growth represented a year-to-year growth of 68%, in which one of the factors seen to have contributed such a high level growth is due to large volume shipments of low-end mobile devices in the region.

The smartphone market, on other hand, maintained a positive growth at 5% quarterly and 11% to the total of mobile phone shipment. IDC, in a report, is expecting for a 68% growth in Indonesia’s smartphone market by year 2012 with the coming of several low-cost smartphones.

M-Commerce Sales Shoot Up as More Consumers Buy via Mobile

US m-commerce sales are on a steep upward trajectory, thanks in part to ever-increasing adoption of smartphones and the mobile internet among the US mobile population. eMarketer estimates mobile commerce sales will reach $6.7 billion this year—a tiny fraction of overall retail sales, to be sure, but a 91.4% increase over 2010. Next year, sales will rise another 73.1%, to $11.6 billion.

$100 Smartphone to Shake Up Asia Telco Sector in 2012

Hungary mobile internet subscription number climbs to 1.946m in October

The number of mobile internet subscriptions in Hungary rose to 1,946,000 in October, while the number of active mobile internet subscriptions – those who used the service at some time during the previous three months – climbed to 1,545,000 from 1,488,000 a month earlier, the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) said on Friday. Mobile internet subscribers transferred 1,661,000 gigabytes of data in October, up from 1,466,000 in September.

E-retail all set to grow the fastest, say industry experts

With 100 million Internet users, India is the third largest Internet market after China and US. With already 100 million Internet users, 40 per cent of which do so through mobile phones, e-retail is set to grow the fastest, say industry experts. Speaking at the annual business summit, Confluence 2011 at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Sachin Oswal, COO, Infibeam said, “Even if the e-commerce and especially e-retail players don’t advertise, by sheer word-of-mouth, the vertical has been fastest in India. Moreover, since the country is in the middle of the technology boom, e-retail will increase tremendously in overall Internet usage in India.”

Modest Radio Revenue Growth Forecast

Radio industry over-the-air (OTA) revenues are forecast to grow a moderate 3.5% to $14.7 billion in 2012, according to a report released in November by BIA/Kelsey. Data from “investing in Radio Market Report” indicates that the radio industry has experienced only muted OTA revenue growth in 2011, projected to end the year with $14.2 billion in revenues, up marginally from $14.1 billion in 2010. The 5-year-outlook shows radio’s OTA revenues growing to $16.6 billion by 2015.

Nigeria’s telecom subscribers to hit 152 million in 2016

Nigeria will continue to be Africa’s biggest mobile market by subscriptions, with a forecast of 152.09 million subscriber base by 2016, according to a research by Informa Telecoms and Media, a provider of business intelligence and strategic services to telecom markets. The report said Africa has become the second most connected region in the world in terms of mobile subscription count, up from fourth place last year. It added that there were over 616 million mobile subscriptions in Africa at the end of September,

According to data from the Mobile Internet Infrastructure research service from TeleGeography partner Synergy Research Group, mobile Internet infrastructure revenues exceeded USD1.3 billion in Q3 2011, growing 21 percent since Q3 2010. Strong market growth is visible around the world, but the Asia-Pacific region is closing in on North America as the largest revenue generator. Synergy defines mobile Internet infrastructure as the hardware and software that facilitate the use and operation of Internet applications on mobile networks. Android has widened its lead as the top smartphone OS in the U.S., according to the latest stats from ComScore. Businesses can tap into the mobile market with contests, coupons and other incentives. Major brands and small businesses alike are quickly learning that one of the fastest ways to reach consumers directly is through their mobile devices. A recent report conducted by Borrell and Associates, a Virginia-based media research firm, found that small businesses in the United States are on track to spend almost $800 million in 2011 on mobile ads. Half of the spending – approximately $400 million – will be spent on creating mobile promotions that offer contests, coupons and other incentives. There are more than 64 million mobile users in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen, and they often turn to their mobile devices to buy goods and services.

Mobile internet use nearing 50%

Some 45% of people surveyed said they made use of the net while out and about, compared with 31% in 2010. PHL telcos go online as mobile market nears saturation

In its totality, the region had the highest mobile phone penetration in the world with the willingness to use those phones to shop and play, stripping out other markets.

Report further said that more consumers from Asia-Pacific region find their Smartphone more interesting than TV, compared to US consumers. Four countries surveyed in APAC had a higher Smartphone penetration – Singapore (62%), Australia (37%), Hong Kong (35%), and urban China (35%).

The APAC takes a lead at 78% compared to US region (31%).

Interactive Marketing Spending to Hit $76.6 Billion in 2016

A new report by Forrester Research forecasts that U.S. interactive marketing spending will reach $76.6 billion by 2016, equal to TV spending this year and comprising 35% of all advertising. That’s a big jump considering that this year interactive will comprise 19% of all spending, according to Forrester. Search and display will continue to be the biggest pieces of the interactive spending pie, comprising 44% and 36%, respectively, in 2016, though search will have lost share from 55% in 2011. Mobile paid advertising and search will experience astronomic growth and are surpassing email and social this year, according to the report.

China Mobile Net Profit Reached CNY61.3 Billion In H1 2011

Chinese telecom operator China Mobile has published its semi-annual results ended June 30, 2011, stating that its profit attributable to shareholders reached CNY61.3 billion, a year-over-year increase of 6.3%; and its net profit rate reached 24.5%. China Mobile said that during the first half of 2011, its operating revenue was CNY250.1 billion, increasing by 8.8% compared with the same period last year. Its revenue from value-added business increased by 18.5% year-over-year to CNY80.4 billion, accounting for 32.2% of its total operating revenue.

Market research firm In-Stat predicts that in the year 2017 approximately 250 million media tablets, or 0.68 million per day, will be shipped.

Interactive Marketing Spend Report: Huge Growth in Mobile to reach $8.2 billion in 2016

The mobile medium is placed again at top spot in the latest marketing report, which dubbed the medium as the fastest-growing category to create a huge growth in the interactive market with 38%, set to reach $8.2 billion between 2011 and 2016. The report is supplied by Forrester Research saying that it attributes the surge to a push toward creating more targeted, dynamic mobile ads instead of so much repurposing of online ads; the rise of mobile commerce; and experimentation with new ad formats for tablets.

The report “US Interactive Marketing Forecast, 2011 to 2016” projects the entire compound annual rate of interactive marketing spending anticipated to reach $76.6 billion by 2016, equivalent to this year’s TV spending comprised of 35% of all advertising. The mobile paid advertising and search will have to experience astronomic growth and are surpassing email and social this year, according to the report.

Meanwhile, search marketing will remain the biggest piece of the interactive spending pie – rising from $18.8 billion to $33.3 billion between 2011 and 2016 – but will actually lose share of all interactive spending in the same period, falling from 55% to 44%. Display advertising is reported to rise in terms of investment from $10.9 billion in 2011 to 2016, due to compound annual growth rate in rich media, text listings, and online video; while email marketing is projected to have a growth rate of 10%, bringing it to $2.5 billion in 2016. Borrell: 20% of Local Marketing Budgets Planned for Mobile

Borrell Associates, which specializes in research covering local and online advertising, issued a new report this week called  “Main Street Goes Mobile” that examines the role that mobile media is projected to play in  local business marketing over the next five years. Pointing to a business and consumer environment ready to embrace mobile advertising, Borrell cites statistics indicating that a full third of website readership already accesses information via mobile devices. Meanwhile, half of local businesses report plans to engage in mobile marketing.

Emerging market operators make the right calls

Growth investors can still capitalise on the expansion of telecoms networks in emerging markets – as well as growing global demand for smartphones – according to sector analysts. Network operators with a global presence offer the potential for capital growth and attractive dividends, backed by strong free cash flow, claims Chris Whitehouse, a UK-based telecoms analyst for US firm T Rowe Price. “Companies that have good geographical exposure – like Vodafone to the US and emerging markets – have a rising free cash profile that more than supports a very generous capital return to shareholders,” he says.

Global mobile phone shipments will hit 1.77 billion in 2016, driven by growth in mobile users in the emerging markets and the proliferation of broadband-enabled handsets, predicts Ovum. In a new forecast, the outfit has found that that the mobile handset market will experience steady growth of 2.5 per cent over the next five years, with shipments increasing by more than 230 million from 2011 to 2016. Ovum principal analyst Adam Leach commented: “Our latest analysis has shown that after a difficult 2009 due to the recession, the mobile handset market bounced back in 2010, with shipments reaching 1.49 billion units.

80% of Small and Medium Sized Businesses Will Invest in Mobile Marketing This year

By the end of 2011, approximately eight in ten small and medium-sized businesses in the United States will pony up and invest in some form of mobile marketing. As the findings of a new survey conducted by Borrell Associates reveals, 83% of respondents either plan to invest or already have invested a portion of their yearly marketing budget into the mobile channel.

Smartphones will drive Africa’s Internet uptake

Affordable smartphones, together with the falling mobile data tariffs, are set to drive an Internet adoption wave across Africa. That’s according to Craige Fleischer, the Regional Director for Southern Africa at Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of the BlackBerry device. Fleischer says the next phase in the development of the continent’s mobile market is mobile Internet. RIM has witnessed huge growth in the usage of data services among its African customers- small businesses and large private and public sector companies, he says.

Tanzania mobile users up 20 pct in 2010, investment seen falling

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 14 (Reuters) – Tanzania’s mobile phone subscribers rose 20 percent to 21 million last year, but low tariffs due to a vicious price war are expected to diminish the appetite for investment in the telecoms sector, industry officials said. East Africa’s second biggest economy’s communications sector has grown at an average annual rate of nearly 70 percent over the past ten years in a sector where seven players have been fighting for market share, forcing tariffs lower. Mobile phone companies invested more than 2 trillion shillings ($1.23 billion) in cellular networks and other fixed assets between 2004 and 2009 in the fastest-growing sector in Tanzania, accounting for 20 percent of gross domestic product.

Mobile trends ‘changing marketing game’

Mobile marketing is changing as more people own smartphones and use the devices to access the internet. Some 90 per cent of adults own mobiles, with the proportion of smartphone owners among them increasingly on the up, according to Experian Simmons. Ofcom said last week that a quarter of UK adults now own a smartphone, with six in ten of them acquiring the device in the last 12 months. Nokia partners with China Mobile for Windows Phone 7 devices

Nokia still hasn’t announced any firm dates about when it plans to bring its first Windows Phone-based smartphones to market, but it’s already lining up launch partners. At a speech in Beijing last week, Nokia executive VP Colin Giles announced the company would be partnering with China Mobile to launch Windows Phone handsets in China—the first time Nokia has announced a carrier partner for the new devices. Giles did not offer any timeline for the Windows Phone devices’ launch, saying only that the phones would be launched in the future.

Mobile World Congress to Focus on Advertising, Marketing

In February, the mobile industry will once again head to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress (MWC), which will feature a new section focusing on different aspects of mobile marketing, show organizer GSM Association (GSMA) said on Tuesday. The event will be held between Feb. 27 and March 1 at the Fira de Barcelona Montjuic in Barcelona. The new mobile marketing section has been dubbed “mPowered Brands,” and will, for example, feature a dedicated exhibition where vendors can showcase advertising research, ad networks and mobile operator ad solutions, according to the GSMA.
