Telecom Market: PLDT to acquire 51.55% of rival Digitel

PLDT forged a deal valued at P69.2 billion ($1.6 billion) to acquire 51.55% of third-ranked Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Digitel). But strong rival, Globe Telecom, said “it was not totally unexpected”.

Under the deal, PLDT is said to acquire debts of Digitel, including zero-coupon bonds issued to Digitel’s parent JG Summit Holdings Inc convertible into 18.6 billion Digitel shares by June 30. It will also absorb P34.1 billion in advances made by JG Summit and other parties.

In a reported PLDT statement, it said that the company would take control of a rival firm to solidify its leading position in a mature industry where a price war had eroded margins. For the record, Digitel (through its Sun Cellular brand) had shaken the country’s mobile phone market with cheap call and text packages, prompting PLDT and second-ranked Globe Telecoms to follow suit.

“Though this initiative alters the country’s telecom landscape, we expect competition within the industry to remain very robust given that other operators, including new entrants, are formidable and well-funded,” said Chairman Manny Pangilinan.

Analyst Jose Mari Lacson said that after the deal, PLDT’s market share is expected to increase at 70%.

Meanwhile, the President and CEO of Globe Telecom, Ernest Cu, told Business Nightly (ANC) that the deal between competitors, PLDT & Digitel, was not totally unexpected saying “players in a matured market, like that of the US, usually needs to consolidate to remain competitive”. Cu, however, said Globe would stick to their customer-centric strategies already in place.

PLDT, partly owned by Hong Kong’s First Pacific Co. Ltd. and Japan’s NTT Communications and NTT DoCoMo, has a market value of $8.9 billion against Digitel’s $269 million. The Globe Telecom, on other hand, is owned by Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) and is valued at $2.1 billion.

Asia’s Mobile Innovation: Total Telecom looks at mega-key markets across ASPAC region

The Asia-Pacific region is seen as home to almost half of the world’s mobile subscribers including some of its fastest-growing and highly-penetrated markets. In fact, according to recent report of Total Telecom, 48% of the world’s over 5 billion mobile subscribers were from Asia-Pacific region as of mid-2010. While India tops the research firm’s year-on-year growth rate table at a sizeable 47%, China’s 17% growth rate (which remains high in comparison to other markets; highly developed Japan recorded 5% growth over the same period, for example) leaves it languishing at number 10. Cambodia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka all saw growth of 30% or more.

At the other end of the scale – and Asia-Pac covers the whole gamut – sit the advanced markets in which penetration is creeping up towards 100%. Singapore tops the chart with 192% penetration, closely followed by Macau at 190%. And next on the list, with penetration of 143% and a well-advanced mobile market, comes Hong Kong, where the global mobile communications industry is set to convene on Wednesday at Mobile Asia Congress 2010.

Three steps for publishers to monetize mobile traffic

One of the most common questions that publishers ask these days is: How can I increase the monetization of my mobile traffic? Clearly the answer is very different for each publisher, but my goal is to lay out a rough guide to get you thinking about what might work for you. For the sake of discussion, let us say you are a U.S.-based publisher with a sales team that calls directly on advertisers and agencies. Also, let us assume most of your traffic is from the United States, and your international traffic is small, so you are not yet monetizing it.

Why Retailers Need an In-Store Mobile Strategy

We tell retailers they don’t want to become Amazon’s off-balance-sheet showroom. Mobile can, to some extent, be the revenge of the physical retailers, because they have the investments in these stores, they have people coming into the stores and knowledge of those customers. They have some tremendous new ways of creating affinity with these folks. A lot of the retailers we’re talking with view in-store mobile as a significant differentiation opportunity.

AT&T decision to end unlimited data plans threatens mobile content consumption

If competing carriers follow AT&T’s lead and phase out unlimited data plans, the consumption of paid and ad-supported mobile content may be affected. AT&T spun its new wireless data plans as geared toward making it “more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet,” but the move is clearly about reigning in the heaviest data users, and all-you-can-eat data plans are vital to spur the high levels of mobile content consumption on which publishers, marketers and advertisers thrive.

How to increase mobile paid search campaign performance

By creating mobile-only search campaigns, advertisers benefit in several areas such as control, messaging, targeting and reporting. Advertisers have more control over their mobile budgets and CPCs by splitting their campaigns. They can adjust bids independently from desktop and better target their creative messaging by including a mobile specific call to action such as “call now” in their ad text.  “The same best practices that have been applied to desktop campaigns are also relevant for mobile: separate your campaigns to better manage mobile, theme your ad groups tightly, make creatives and keywords relevant to the landing page…

Carriers’ brand and position in value chain at risk

The mobile commerce prerogative for retailers in 2010

As retailers settle into their routine this year, one thing must change from 2009: mobile must no longer suffer benign neglect. At risk are dashed consumer expectations for consistent experience across store, catalog, online and mobile. While retailers and marketers have suffered through a 2009 holiday of endless checklists, sage advice and told-you-so’s, now is the time to examine how the American consumer is changing in her shopping and buying habits, as well as in her receptivity and response to targeted marketing messages.

How the Mobile Decade will change marketing, media and commerce

The nation stands today at a pivotal point where mobile will soon infuse every marketing, media and retail decision just as the Internet did in the last ten years. The Mobile Decade is upon us. Marketers have only to look around this country and see the one thing that consumers today cannot be parted from: their mobile phone. And that device, as the decade wears on, will become the interface between consumer and society.
